Job Description

Sourcing new mills for lower costs, better quality and quicker lead times

• To identify and develop fabric sources as close to the factory as possible which are capable of delivering required fabric qualities at or below target cost
Cost price negotiations
• To liaise with UK to find out which fabrics in development are most important and cross cost with a few mills to negotiate the lowest price and help UK win business.
Development of new fabrics which are lower cost, better quality and quicker
• To work with UK and with mills to develop new fabrics, establishing appropriate quality standards in line with Black Book standards and submitting required test results, technical hangers etc to UK in time with the critical path deadlines for customer sign off

Risk Management & Pre-production

To carry out risk assessment on all samples from concept stage, highlighting high risk products and implementing corrective actions to minimize the risks
• through additional lab testing,
• instructing development lengths early in the process,
• careful piloting
• conducting wearer trials
• developing a lower risk quality in parallel
• or developing the desired quality with a technically more reliable mill

To prepare the pre production pack and communicate this to the fabric mill ensuring the mill has a clear understanding of all standards expected. For all fabrics which have been risk assessed RED, the company Fabric technologist must travel to the mill to talk through the preproduction face to face with the right person at the mill.

Managing Bulk

• Working with merchandising, to ensure that the mill is aware of required delivery schedule
• To return to the mill for positive mill release of bulk fabric prior to dispatch, submitting bulk hangers in line with the critical path
• To agree frequency of swatches to be submitted to monitor ongoing production ensuring that standards are maintained

Claims for Losses

• If the mill fails to meet the standards set, the fabric technical manager is to identify costs incurred by company, collect the evidence of these losses and recover costs from the fabric mill.

Managing the Team

• To recruit and train a fabric technical team including two fabric technologists and one laboratory technician

Person Specifications

• Fabric Technical college qualification
• Experience of managing a technical team in a garment factory ideally making for M&S or another similar international retailer
• Detailed accurate person with good problem solving skills and self confidence to make a decision based on best evidence available.
• Good spoken and written English
• Negotiation skills
